About The Forum

The first Sino-U.S. Forum was launched in Beijing on October 27, 2013, at Peking University by Dr. HE Shu and Dr. Ann Auman, with the guidance of Ms. Diane Perushek, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Global Relations Director.

That forum marked the beginning of a strong relationship between the Peking University School of Journalism and Communication and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa School of Communications. Our goal is to encourage scholarly and student exchanges through events such as this one. This second forum, held at the University of Hawai'i, builds on that relationship.

We wish to acknowledge the support provided by the College of Social Sciences, the UHM School of Communications, Peking University School of Journalism and Communication, the Weian Foundation at PKU, the UHM Louise Hess Miller Fund for Modern Media and the Carol Burnett Fund for Responsible Journalism.

On behalf of the Dean of the College of Social Sciences, Denise Eby Konan, and all the faculty and staff of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa School of Communications, I would like to welcome you to the 2nd Annual Sino-U.S. Forum on Journalism in the Global Environment. This year’s theme is Comparative Online and Social Media.

My Peking University co-host, Dr. HE Shu, and I chose this theme because of the importance of online and digital media in shaping global relationships today. As global leaders, China and the U.S. will greatly benefit from increasing our understanding of each other’s media systems, values and culture. This conference aims to bring us closer as all participants, both academics and professionals, engage in a dialogue on certain key issues in digital and online media. These issues include the impact of social media that’s used by citizens and journalists on news and information as well as issues in the production and distribution of digital news.

The first Sino-U.S. Forum was held in Beijing on October 27, 2013, at Peking University. That forum marked the beginning of what we believe will be a long and productive relationship between the Peking University School of Journalism and Communication and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa School of Communications. Our goal is to encourage and facilitate scholarly and student exchanges through events such as this one as well as study tours at each other’s universities. These exchanges will further solidify our longstanding ties between our two universities.

We think you’ll leave this forum with new insights and many new friendships.

-Ann Auman
